The Furzedown Festival Timetable 2009



Saturday 30th May
1:30 - 5.00pm 

"Shoot Furzedown" with Lomography - Session 1 FREE EVENT open to all

Calling all camera enthusiasts! Create a snapshot portrait of Furzedown with
Lomography and help create a breathtaking Furzedown LomoWall that will
be exhibited in full glory at the Fun Day on 20th June.

What on earth is Lomo?
Lomography is a growing socio-cultural movement and interactive online and offline
approach to using experimental and creative analogue photography as a tool to
communicate with, absorb and capture the world.


Learn how to use the iconic cameras at our workshop followed by a ‘Lomographic’
group tour of Furzedown. This is your opportunity to shoot a roll of film keeping in
mind the first rule of Lomography – “don’t think, just shoot”! 
At the end of the walk, turn in your camera and head home.
Please arrive at 1.30pm as the tour will take place at 2.30pm

"Shoot Furzedown" with Lomography - Session 2 

Collect your developed films and participate in the creation of the Furzedown LomoWall by
not only submitting your best shots but by also designing part of the LomoWall.

Everyone is welcome – even if you didn’t take any photos.
 

Cost: £2.00 per person, including hire of Lomography camera, film and development.

Compere - Alexis Dubus 

The South London Concert Band
have been playing classical, pop and
show tunes for over 40 years .The Concert Band comprises brass, woodwind
and percussion and performs regularly in pretty much anywhere you can fit in
40 or so musicians with their instruments!











Sherika Sherard
has recently performed at The Jazz Café and is back by
popular demand; 17 year old Sherika’s style is acoustic, lounge and folk
which has lead to comparisons to Tracy Chapman and India A
irie.











Streatham Voices
are regulars at the festival due to their wide ranging mix of
music; which includes gospel, pop, South African township and jazz.
They are a local group who welcome interest from new members.










Trevor John
Furzedown based Singer/Songwriter, Composer & Cartoonist Trevor John 
dishes up an eclectic mix of Jazzy Bluesy Folksy Funky Klesmer Gypsy Punk. 
Catchy tunes delivered with an emotional edge & spiced with some killer lyrics.










Butch & Femme 
are the rock and blues sensations from Graveney School.
This four-piece act list their influences as The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry
and Jimi Hendrix. They would be a welcome addition on Guitar Hero! 










The Henry Road
Tooting home-grown Alternative, Indie, Psychedelic rockers,
who were recently described by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘Mad, original
and really rather brilliant’.

Furzedown’s Carousing Choristers - are back!  Following the
Enchanted Evening that was SingalongaSouthPacific and the
Whipcrackaway Whirlwind of SingalongaCalamityJane we couldn’t
quite make up our minds about a theme for 2009.  
So we are going for broke with:

history and architecture of the two areas.

Walk finishes at Chandlers Cafe, Moyser Road, for tea.

Free – with a small charge, payable on the day, for those who
would like tea at Chandlers.

E&A Wates – the first 100 years History talk FREE EVENT open to all

An illustrated talk with memorabilia by Roger Wates, charting the fascinating
history of the furnishing company since it was established in 1900.

Interesting anecdotes about the four brothers, their involvement with the building industry
and the fascinating role within World War II will be discussed along with the company’s
development within so many contrasting decades of style and design.

The firm’s current activities, projects and growth into 21st Century retailing will also be presented.

Refreshments available before and after the talk.

with a live performance from the South London Children’s Guitar Orchestra


Gwen Race invites you to visit her garden on Wednesday evening, 24th June. 
It is a mature garden with mostly evergreen plants and pots providing a restful quality
.

There is a deep pond designed from the original Anderson shelter. The  
central area, once a lawn, is now slated.

Live music at 7.00 and 7.40pm from the 15-strong South London Children’s Guitar Orchestra,
conducted by Bruce Welch.













Entrance (FREE) is through the garage. Wine and nibbles with a sales table will  
be available - all donations to go to The Furzedown Project.

Making history in Furzedown FREE EVENT

Everyone has stories to tell.  

Record your experiences and listen to the stories of others at this interactive event
presented by Furzedown Voices, the oral history project in Furzedown.


Young or older, in the recording booth, tell us about your childhood or your story
about moving here from another area or another country.
   

Find out who lived, in 1911, where you do now from the census returns.

Listen to the life stories of Furzedown residents already collected by the oral history project.

Children and families – play vintage board and card games, draw a picture of your most vivid
childhood experience and see it displayed on the furzedownvoices website, and watch Billy’s Day,
a short film made with the children of Furzedown Primary School in the 1970s.


Enjoy tasty cakes and biscuits from the themed 1940s, 1950s and 1960s refreshment tables,
accompanied by music from the era.


Watch archive films of the area, browse the photographic display and listen to archive tapes of children singing at Furzedown Primary School. 

A FREE cake and drink of choice to anyone who brings along an old photograph of the area which, during the event, we could scan and copy into our archive.

Who’s that?  . . . It’s Burglar Bill

Furzedown’s Theatre Company, Pandora’s Box, will be performing Burglar Bill,
a musical version of the popular children’s book by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. 

Using their special blend of live action, puppets, music and comedy, the production
will be suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 8 and their families, and
there will be themed activities downstairs during the show for younger children.

Formed in 1948, the South London Concert Band is the area's longest established concert band. 

Making two appearances this year at the Furzedown Festival, here is a second
chance to enjoy a full programme of rousing music, including marches, popular
contemporary tunes, classical and film music.

Performance – A Tangled Truth – Mary of Magdala  FREE EVENT

This one person performance by June Boyce-Tillman will use song, music
and storytelling to examine the place of Mary Magdalene in the history
of Christianity and the way in which, at different times, her story has become
confused.

It will look at some of the issues involved in The Da Vinci Code,
the place of women’s authority and how Mary Magdalene became identified
as a penitent sinner.

The hour’s performance will be followed by a discussion.

Film: The Age of Stupid  FREE EVENT

A compelling 90-minute docu-drama about climate change.

Set in the future, Oscar-nominated
Pete Postlethwaite stars
as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055,
looking back at “archive” footage from 2007 and asking:
why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

The film is an imaginative and dramatic assault on the
institutional complacency shrouding the issue.

This film has a PG12 Rating. 

Plus a post show debate about the film and other climate change issues.
